Insect Insanity App

Insect Insanity App

Purpose: "Insect Insanity is a fun mobile app for users to find, archive, and submit different species of insects. We've partnered with Dr. Higgenoma of the World Insect Society and renowned author of "Don't let it Bug You" to help catalog the world's 950,000 species  of insects. Users will have the ability to search the entire catalog of insects, as well as submit their own insect findings to be added to the catalog."

Scope Overview: "The scope of this project is based on a hypothesis created with stakeholders of the World Insect Society. It is limited to a high-level overview of the key components and required functionality of the first release. The goal of this exercise is to introduce the core functionality, and how people might go about using the app. Based on the success of the first release, we will look to monetize the app within Colleges and Universities. We are looking for a UX recommendation from the design team."

Business Goals: "Identify insects in certain locations to inform conversation efforts & raise awareness of the World Insect Society."

User Goals: "Identify and learn about the types of insects in their area, and all across the world."

Functionality & Key Components

Learn about various insects and their traits. Ability to discover both popular species and new and unusual species of insects. The following content and metadata should be considered: Description of species, dates discovered, misc notes, images or illustrations (detailed view, known for traits, search, browse, discover), color, type, size, name, habitat/location, featured species, & categorize by popular. User submissions: Ability for users to submit and categorize insects they find in their area, photo uploads, add/edit descriptions.

After going through the initial concepts with my team and then I continued to work on the project on my own. I created a new process for working through the Local and Global parts of the MAP feature in the app. Also to create their own bug for the live feed of people sharing their bug findings from all over the world and locally. Users can easily upload photos and data with software recognition to be able to help narrow down the search to find the exact species of bug they're looking for.

This feature for creating a bug would include adding things like Shape, Colors, Pattern, Legs, Eyes, & Name of Type (translating your name and a species of bug into a scientific bug name).

The live feed feature is on the home page and the user's profile would have the people they follow—are friends with—so they can filter through the live feed based on what they are more interested in. On their Profile, they can find messaging as well as the share feature (this can also be found on the Home screen to share easily with all users). There would be a feature on the Share feature page where the user can have it be publicly shared or just shared between their followers (like Facebook).
